Nights in Rodanthe
Pages 169-188
In this section of the reading Adrienne continues to tell her daughter, Amanda, the story of her past love with Paul Flanner. While telling this story, Amanda questioned her mom about what happened. On the other hand, Jean also is questioning Adrienne about how things went at the Inn while she was away and what kind of guy Paul Flanner was. As she is answering, Adrienne sticks to the point and refuses to give extra details. At the end of her story telling to Jean she can no longer hold it in anymore and begins to start bawling. When Adrienne begins to do her last minute walk through at the Inn before leaving, she finds a note Paul left for her and this only makes matters of leaving worse.
The biggest issue in this section of reading is Amanda's questioning with where Paul Flanner currently is now that he is no longer in Rodanthe and why everything changed so dramatically. Also, she wonders if she still has feelings for him with everything that has been going on with her and her previous relationship and marriage with her children's father. "Amanda leaned forward, her face filled with concern. "Then where is he?" (Page 179). This quote provokes more thought, bringing the mother and daughter into a deeper conversation. The problem that Adrienne has is that her previous relationship has been drifting apart.
My connection with this story is the loss of connection with summer romances. Personally I gain many connections with people over the summer months and in that time we become very close with each other. Then just as quickly as summer comes it goes and so does that one person I made so many great memories with. This is the same incidence that Paul and Adrienne have with each other and I know exactly what it feels like. Whether it takes a few weeks to fall in love or just a few days; the feeling is definitely mutual.
