Nights In Rodanthe
Pages 57-81

In this selection of reading, Paul Flanner, the only guest staying at the Inn, explains about why he is staying at the Inn and why he came in the first place. He tells Adrienne that he came because he needed to talk to someone about a very important matter. It was a matter of keeping his credibility as a surgeon and he didn't
want anyone to ever think bad of his practicing. He knew that the big nor'easter was heading toward them soon, as it had been broadcasted all over news and radio stations for the past few days. As Adrienne and him begin to talk more they begin to learn more about each other and why they ended up where they were today. They find it very easy to talk to each other because they have so much in common. They spend much time together in the kitchen, continuing to tell stories while cooking meals together. A special bond is instantly formed and by the end of the reading you find out they both had no partner.

One of the most important concepts that came from this particular reading was when they came to conclusions about why not having the previous spouses in their lives could end up being a good thing. "I am being serious. I wouldn't change a thing." (page 79). Once you grasp the idea that he is happy now where he is in his life (Paul) and that he has taken the better of the worse, you think about how it can be a positive thing. You know he obviously is already starting to hint that he has gained interest in Adrienne and that being single at this very moment in his life may have benefits just a little father down the road.

Personally, I am able to connect to these few chapters in the story. When you gain interest in someone a little too quickly and fall for them a little too hard you realize some qualities you didn't acknowledge from the beginning. Once everything is over and done with with that one person you realize why things didn't work out and you are back to having a clean slate and more opportunities with other people. Dating can be a very emotional and confusing sort of rollercoaster and sometimes just going with it can be a little too easy at times. When you feel so strongly about something you know isn't right, it can take a lot of courage and strength  to be able to jump off of the ride and move on. Life ain't always beautiful, but it's a beautiful ride.
